Rosie's Story

Blended Benefits Provide Total Cover When You Need it Most

Rosie was a well loved Fonterra employee for five years, a larger than life character with an infectious laugh and endless energy.

At the age of 56, she was diagnosed with bowel cancer.

Rosie had never considered insurance something necessary, particularly when she always felt well and had a "live life to the fullest" attitude so when the diagnosis came, it was a complete shock. As she struggled to come to terms with her illness, a much needed Trauma payout of $75,000 was welcome as she managed her gruelling treatment schedule while on sick leave from work.

Ultimately though, after two surgeries and chemotherapy, the disease took its toll and Rosie reluctantly accepted she was no longer able to continue working. At this stage, the Income Protection benefit kicked in paying her 55% of her income - nearly $7,000 per month, going a long way in covering day to day expenses. It wasn’t long before Rosie was told her life expectancy was less than a year.

“Mum’s Life Insurance paid out early which was wonderful despite the circumstances” says daughter Miriama, “we were able to sort everything out while she was still with us, with her telling us exactly what she wanted. it gave her peace of mind and allowed us to focus on just her and her needs. She left us knowing she’d done the best for us.”  “When you come face to face with a challenge like this, it’s hard to keep perspective and manage your emotions at the same time, insurance helps you at a time when you need it most, even in the very worst circumstances.”

As a final benefit delivered to Rosie’s family, her Income protection cover paid a funeral payment of 10 weeks income to cover expenses before the insurer closed the file.

Top tip: Rosie paid around $2,500 in premium over the five years of the policy, and her family received over $850,000 in benefits during the same period. Always consider the broader long term benefits of your cover and the support it provides to those you leave behind.
